Senator Bill Cook and members of the First Flight Society Board of Directors held a ceremony expressing North Carolina’s pride in the historic achievements of Wilbur and Orville Wright by accomplishing the world’s first successful powered, sustained and controlled flight. Senator Cook announced a special budget appropriation from the State of North Carolina, which is earmarked to support and promote public awareness of the historic achievement of the Wright Brothers. It was not happenstance that the location of mankind’s first successful powered flight remains open to the public. It was the direct result of a group of individuals who in 1926 joined together to form what is now the First Flight Society, which is the oldest non-profit organization in Dare County. The First Flight Society is devoted to fostering and promoting a public awareness of and wide-spread of interest in the origin, history, and future of flight, in all its forms and to memorialize Orville and Wilbur Wright.
