Mark Flynn

Mark Flynn, Quinton, VA– Mark Flynn was appointed as Director of the Virginia Department of Aviation by Governor Ralph Northam in January, 2018, and served until January, 2021. Flynn is a pilot (SEL, Commercial, Instrument, Instructor) who owns and flies a 1959 Champion taildragger, the aircraft he got his private ticket in. The only time he took it apart was on purpose – to repaint it.

Flynn has forty-three years of public service to local government as a county attorney, city attorney, counsel for several Virginia airports and general counsel to the Virginia Municipal League, where he worked for 17 years.  Flynn is the past president of the Virginia Local Government Attorney’s Association and the 2013 recipient of that organization’s Edward Finnegan Award for Distinguished Service.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in forestry at Virginia Tech and his juris doctorate from Washington & Lee University Law School in 1980.  Mark is married to Sue Rowland and has one daughter, Kathryn, a Navy Lieutenant, serving in Bahrain.
