The 116th Wright Brothers Anniversary of Powered Flight and More.

ON DECEMBER 17, 2019 THE FIRST FLIGHT SOCIETY HONORS A 99-YEAR-OLD WWII VETERAN, THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BERLIN AIRLIFT AND THE 116TH ANNIVERSARY OF POWERED FLIGHT.

JOIN US AT WRIGHT BROTHERS NATIONAL MONUMENT IN KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC.

The First Flight Society annually honors those individuals and groups that have achieved significant “firsts” in aviation and includes them in our Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine exhibit at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. This year’s honorees are 99-year-old Colonel Gail Halvorsen, USAF (Ret) “the Candy Bomber” and the Berlin Airlift (June 27, 1948 to May 12, 1949) commemorating the 70th Anniversary of that historic event.

    Canceled-The Wright Brothers Musical Returns!

    FFS and ECSU will host the return of Fresh Brewed Productions’ original musical, “Those Daring Young Men and Their Flying Machine” . Performed last year in Kitty Hawk, NC, the troupe will perform at the GR Little Theater on the ECSU campus on November 2nd and 3rd 2019.     Celebrate National Aviation Day with Us!

    CELEBRATE NATIONAL AVIATION DAY AND ORVILLE WRIGHT’S BIRTHDAY

     WITH THE FIRST FLIGHT SOCIETY!

    • Meet members and learn about the First Flight Society
    • Aviation static displays: Navion, Caravans, Med Flight Helo, Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) C-172, and ECSU simulator
    • Learn about the ECSU STEM Progams
    • Visit the Airport Museum and learn about the WWII squadrons that had special training at NAAS Manteo (the origin of this airport).

    Wright Brothers National Memorial celebrates 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 moon landing, July 18-20

    Wright Brothers National Memorial, in partnership with Outer Banks Forever, First Flight Foundation, and First Flight Society, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with a series of events from July 18-20.

    The anniversary weekend launches the evening of July 18th with a special space-themed movie showing at Dowdy Park in Nags Head, sponsored by the First Flight Foundation. Special space-themed ranger-programs will take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

    On July 20th, the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the public is invited to watch a special rebroadcast of the news coverage of the original lunar landing outside the visitor center.
